When reading about light and shadow, I was intrigued on the section on the northern lights. Macauley describes these lights as “one of the natural world’s most extravagant spectacles ” (247). I’ve always been intrigued by these lights, and definitely want to see them sometime. I think its crazy how the northern lights form, electrons stream towards the Earth along its magnetic field and collide with the highest air particles. This results in a gorgeous display of lights, also known as the aurora borealis. You can see these lights best in areas of the world closer to the Arctic Circle, including Alaska, Canada, Iceland, Greenland, Norway, Sweden and Finland. I’ve only seen the northern lights in pictures, and these are some of my favorites!

When I visited Iceland with students it was in May so there were no northern lights display but we visited a museum about them. I ended up taking pictures of the images in the museum. So, is that cheating or lying? 😉
